Book Review: The New Menopause by Dr. Mary Claire Haver

If you’re paying attention right now, you’ll see that menopause is having a moment — and hopefully, it lasts a long time. I love seeing women come together, talk openly about what’s happening in their bodies, and find resources for long-term health and vibrancy.

Dr. Haver’s book arrived at the perfect time. Women are eager to understand what’s going on in their bodies, and she offers clear explanations of the physiological changes during the peri- and postmenopausal years.

She also breaks down the research — and the lack of research — on menopause hormone therapy (MHT), which you might also see called HRT or BHRT.

Book Review: My main takeaways from The New Menopause

  • Menopause impacts every body system.

  • MHT can be a safe and effective treatment, but there’s a window of opportunity — ideally within 10 years of menopause.

  • You can advocate for yourself and work with menopause-literate practitioners. (Most doctors receive fewer than 30 hours of menopause training!).  We have a great list; reach out to us if you need a referral.

  • There are significant physiological changes that occur: loss of skin collagen, vaginal changes, increased risk of osteoporosis, elevated cholesterol, insulin resistance, microbiome shifts, and more.

The Bottom Line

Menopause hormone therapy (MHT) is useful and safe for most people, but it’s not the right fit for everyone. At Rebecca Snow Nutrition & Herbs, we support each client’s choice—whether they decide to use hormones or not.

No matter what path you choose, food will always be a powerful tool to support your health. Herbs are also a great option for those taking a natural approach.
